Dear Muriel Battersby,
Thank you for your email. I tried looking up your mother's purchase receipt with the information listed, and I was unable to locate it. Could you please forward me the name of the purchaser and the city and the state of the store's location? Also is 03/19/1996 the exact date of purchase or an estimate?

Dear Muriel Battersby,
Thank you for that information. I did find the purchase information for your mother's ring. Unfortunately, it is an item we no longer carry, so I don't have the color and clarity of the diamond available. If you are interested in getting the diamond appraised, we can send it to an independent appraiser for you at a fee. There is a difference in an appraisal amount and a price that a jeweler who resells jewelry will give you. The majority of resellers who buy jewelry do so at a reduced price to increase their profit in the resell.
If I can assist you further, please let me know.

Re: diamond ring from Kay Jewelers: Registration # 10205
Dear Mr. Light
In 1996, my Mother and Lewis Mills purchased diamond rings from Kay Jewelers in Alexandria, Virginia. My Mother passed away in 2003, leaving her wedding rings to me and my sister.
I decided to sell my ring, the 1 carat diamond solitaire, whose retail value was $4995.00. I took it to a couple of local jewelers who told me, much to by disbelief, that said ring isn’t worth anything as there is a big black spot inside it.
I know diamonds are not worth nearly as much as you pay for them, but this is outrageous. I don’t know, and I’m not making accusations of any kind, but I certainly hope it is not policy at Kay Jewelers to take advantage of the elderly and unknowledgeable couples seeking to make a purchase at their store.
I have enclosed a copy of the sales receipt if you wish to verify the purchase. I would like to know what happened and if you could enlighten me, I would appreciate it very much. I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Muriel A. Battersby
